The Upper Dolpa Trek is a high-altitude adventure into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally rich regions. Nestled within the Shey Phoksundo National Park, this trek offers trekkers a rare opportunity to experience ancient Tibetan Buddhism, explore untouched landscapes, and discover the hidden world of the Dolpo people.
The journey begins with a scenic flight to Juphal via Nepalgunj, followed by a trail that weaves through deep river gorges, pine forests, and majestic valleys. Early on, the stunning Phoksundo Lake captivates visitors with its surreal turquoise color and serene surroundings. The lake is regarded as sacred by locals and is often the spiritual highlight of the trek.
As the trail progresses northward, trekkers cross high passes such as Kang La and Saldang La, both offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan range and the rugged Tibetan plateau. The arid, wind-swept landscape north of Phoksundo starkly contrasts with the lush southern valleys.
The route leads to the legendary Shey Gompa, a red-walled monastery nestled beneath the Crystal Mountain. It holds immense religious significance and is the focal point for the Shey Festival, held every 12 years. This spiritual atmosphere is deepened by the chants of monks and the spinning of prayer wheels.
Trekkers then venture into remote villages like Saldang and Dho Tarap, where traditional lifestyles persist in harmony with nature. These communities are renowned for their hospitality, ancient customs, and resilience in an unforgiving environment.
Despite its physical demands and the logistical complexities of permits and remoteness, the Upper Dolpa Trek rewards those who venture into its highlands with unmatched spiritual, cultural, and natural richness.
The ideal times for the Upper Dolpa Trek are late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October), when weather conditions are generally stable and favorable for trekking.
May and June offer clear skies and mild temperatures, making it ideal for viewing mountain landscapes and traversing high passes. During this season, the trails are decorated with blooming alpine flowers, adding color to the arid terrain.
September and October are equally popular due to post-monsoon clarity, fresh greenery, and ideal trekking temperatures. This is also a great time to observe traditional harvest activities in local villages.
Trekking during winter or monsoon is strongly discouraged due to snow-blocked passes or slippery, flooded trails. Many parts of Upper Dolpa become inaccessible during these months.
