Overview

The extended 19-day Thapa Peak Expedition offers a more comprehensive and acclimatization-focused approach to climbing this magnificent peak in Nepal’s Annapurna region. Also known as Tent Peak, Thapa Peak (5,663m) provides a challenging yet non-technical mountaineering experience suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and a desire for Himalayan adventure. This itinerary allows for a deeper exploration of the Annapurna Sanctuary and the cultural richness of the region.

The journey begins with a scenic trek through the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, passing through diverse ecosystems and traditional Gurung villages. This gradual ascent allows for optimal acclimatization, crucial for a safe and successful summit attempt. We’ll trek through rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and alongside glacial rivers, eventually reaching the stunning Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks.

From ABC, we’ll establish our base camp for Thapa Peak (Tent Peak Base Camp) and undergo basic mountaineering training. The ascent to the summit involves traversing glaciers and snow slopes, guided by our experienced climbing Sherpas. While technically straightforward, the high altitude demands respect and careful pacing. The reward from the summit is an unparalleled panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Our extended itinerary includes a descent through a different route, leading us to the unique cultural landscape of the Mustang region, with visits to the charming Thakali villages of Marpha and Jomsom. This provides a richer cultural experience and varied scenery before our return to Pokhara and Kathmandu.

Best Season to Visit Thapa Peak

Similar to most trekking and climbing expeditions in Nepal, the best seasons to undertake the Thapa Peak Expedition are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). This extended itinerary benefits greatly from the stable weather and clear skies these seasons offer, ensuring better trekking and climbing conditions, as well as magnificent mountain views.

  • Spring: Offers blooming rhododendron forests at lower elevations and pleasant temperatures for trekking through the Annapurna Sanctuary. The mountain views are generally clear, and climbing conditions are favorable.
  • Autumn: Provides excellent visibility with crisp and dry air. The post-monsoon landscape is lush, and the stable weather is ideal for both trekking and high-altitude climbing.

Trekking and climbing outside these seasons can be significantly more challenging due to monsoon rains (June to August) and severe cold and snow during winter (December to February).
