The Lobuche Peak Expedition is a captivating mountaineering adventure set in the heart of Nepal’s Khumbu (Everest) region. Standing at 6,119 meters (20,075 feet), Lobuche East (the more commonly climbed of its two summits) is classified as a ‘trekking peak’ by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). While not overly technical compared to some other peaks, it demands basic mountaineering skills, good physical fitness, and proper acclimatization, making it an ideal choice for aspiring mountaineers or experienced trekkers looking for their first true climbing challenge in the Himalayas.
The expedition commences with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The trekking route follows the renowned path to Everest Base Camp, leading you through lush rhododendron and pine forests, across suspension bridges adorned with prayer flags, and into vibrant Sherpa villages such as Phakding, Namche Bazaar, and Dingboche. This gradual ascent is crucial for proper acclimatization, aided by dedicated rest days and optional side trips to elevated viewpoints like Everest View Hotel, Dingboche’s Nagarjun Hill, and the iconic Kalapatthar. The trek also includes a visit to Everest Base Camp itself, adding an immense sense of achievement before the climb.
From Lobuche village, the expedition veers off the main EBC trail to establish Lobuche Peak Base Camp and then High Camp. The climb to the summit involves navigating a combination of moraine, rocky slopes, and snow/ice sections. Fixed ropes are typically utilized on the steeper and more exposed parts of the route, requiring climbers to be proficient in using ascenders (jumars) and rappelling techniques. Our experienced climbing Sherpas will guide and assist you every step of the way, ensuring your safety and maximizing your chances of a successful summit.
The summit of Lobuche Peak offers truly spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding Himalayan giants, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, and Cho Oyu, creating an unforgettable panorama that makes every challenging step worthwhile. This expedition promises a profound sense of accomplishment and an intimate connection with the majestic Everest landscape.
The best seasons to undertake the Lobuche Peak Expedition are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). These periods offer the most favorable weather conditions for both trekking and climbing.
Climbing during the monsoon (June to early September) is not advisable due to heavy rainfall, cloud cover, and increased risk of landslides and flight delays. Winter (December to February) presents extreme cold, strong winds, and heavy snowfall, making the ascent significantly more challenging and hazardous.

At Base Camp and High Camp, our dedicated kitchen crew will prepare a variety of fresh and hygienic meals, specifically designed to meet the caloric and nutritional demands of high-altitude climbing. Safe drinking water (boiled or purified) will be provided at all camps.
To undertake the Lobuche Peak Expedition, you will need the following crucial permits:
Alpine Wonder Treks and Expeditions will handle the acquisition of all these necessary permits on your behalf. We will require clear copies of your passport and passport-sized photographs well in advance of your expedition.
Alpine Wonder Treks and Expedition is a government-authorized trekking and mountaineering operator in Nepal and a proud member of the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Upon confirmation of your booking, please provide us with the following essential documents at least 8 weeks prior to your expedition departure date: a clear color copy of your passport, high-resolution passport-sized photographs, and comprehensive details of your travel insurance policy (which must include high-altitude trekking, mountaineering above 6,000 meters, and emergency helicopter evacuation coverage). Your international flight details are also required. The remaining balance of the expedition cost can be settled upon your arrival in Kathmandu in cash (USD, EUR, or GBP) or via bank transfer, Wise, or credit card (a processing fee may apply for credit card payments). A detailed payment guide will be provided after your initial booking.
(Note: We provide all group technical climbing gear. Please inform us if you need to rent any personal technical gear in Kathmandu.)
Lobuche Peak is considered a moderately technical climbing peak. It requires basic mountaineering skills like using crampons, ice axe, and fixed ropes. It’s suitable for fit trekkers with some prior climbing experience or a willingness to learn.
The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) for stable weather and clear views.
This expedition typically lasts 18 days, including travel to/from Kathmandu, the trek to base camp, acclimatization days, and the climbing period with contingency days.
Participants should have prior experience with trekking at high altitudes and be comfortable with basic snow and ice climbing techniques. Familiarity with fixed ropes, ascenders, and rappelling is essential.
The summit of Lobuche East Peak is 6,119 meters (20,075 feet).
Accommodation includes hotels in Kathmandu, teahouses during the trek, and high-quality mountaineering tents at Lobuche Base Camp and High Camp.
Full board meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are provided throughout the trek and climb. This includes varied Nepali and international dishes, with a focus on fresh and hygienic preparation to meet high-altitude nutritional needs.
Safety is our top priority. Our itinerary incorporates a gradual ascent with multiple acclimatization days. Our certified climbing Sherpas are highly trained in high-altitude first aid and emergency procedures. We carry oxygen, satellite phones, and comprehensive medical kits.
You will need the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Fee, and a specific Lobuche Peak Climbing Permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
You will need your own personal climbing gear such as a climbing harness, helmet, ice axe, crampons, ascender (jumar), belay device, and various carabiners/slings. We provide all group technical climbing gear, and personal gear can often be rented in Kathmandu.
