The Kyajo Ri Peak Expedition is a highly rewarding and challenging mountaineering adventure located in the heart of Nepal’s Everest (Khumbu) region. Standing at 6,186 meters (20,295 feet), Kyajo Ri is classified as a ‘trekking peak’ by the NMA, but it demands significant technical climbing skills, making it suitable for experienced mountaineers seeking a true Himalayan challenge. This expedition offers a unique blend of high-altitude trekking through the iconic Everest trails and a genuine climbing experience.
The journey begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The trek gradually ascends through traditional Sherpa villages, vibrant rhododendron forests, and across suspension bridges, allowing for essential acclimatization. A key part of the approach involves trekking into the stunning Gokyo Valley, renowned for its turquoise lakes and the panoramic views from Gokyo Ri. This provides excellent acclimatization and spectacular photographic opportunities before the climbing phase.
From the main trekking route, the expedition diverts towards Kyajo Ri’s secluded base camp, offering a sense of true wilderness. The climb itself involves navigating varied terrain, including glacial moraines, ice, snow, and challenging rock sections. Fixed ropes are typically used on steeper sections and mixed ground, requiring proficiency in ascenders (jumars) and rappelling. Our experienced climbing Sherpas will lead the way, ensuring safety and providing expert guidance.
Reaching the summit of Kyajo Ri offers unparalleled panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and a multitude of other Himalayan giants. This expedition is ideal for well-prepared climbers looking to push their boundaries on a technical 6,000-meter peak in one of the world’s most spectacular mountain ranges.
The best seasons to undertake the Kyajo Ri Peak Expedition are spring (April to May) and autumn (late September to November). These periods offer the most stable weather conditions, which are crucial for a technical climb at this altitude.
Climbing during the monsoon (June to early September) is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, increased avalanche risk, and poor visibility. Winter (December to March) brings extreme cold, heavy snow, and strong winds, making the climb significantly more hazardous.

During the trekking sections from Lukla to Base Camp, you will be accommodated in local teahouses, which provide basic but clean rooms (mostly twin-sharing) with simple beds and blankets. At Kyajo Ri Base Camp, High Camp I, and High Camp II, you will be staying in high-quality mountaineering tents provided by Alpine Wonder Treks and Expeditions. These tents are designed for comfort and protection in high-altitude environments.
Throughout the expedition, you will be provided with three nutritious meals a day. In teahouses, you can choose from their menu, which typically includes Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry), noodles, pasta, potato dishes, and occasionally meat options. At Base Camp and High Camps, our dedicated kitchen crew will prepare a variety of fresh and hygienic meals, specifically designed to meet the caloric and nutritional demands of high-altitude climbing. Safe drinking water (boiled or purified) will be provided at all camps.
To undertake the Kyajo Ri Peak Expedition, you will need the following crucial permits:
Alpine Wonder Treks and Expeditions will handle the acquisition of all these necessary permits on your behalf. We will require clear copies of your passport and passport-sized photographs well in advance of your expedition.
Alpine Wonder Treks and Expedition is a government-authorized trekking and mountaineering operator in Nepal and a proud member of the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). To confirm your Kyajo Ri Peak Expedition booking, we require a 25% non-refundable advance payment of the total trip cost. This advance payment can be made via bank transfer, Wise, or through our secure online payment gateway.
Upon confirmation of your booking, please provide us with the following essential documents at least 8 weeks prior to your expedition departure date: a clear color copy of your passport, high-resolution passport-sized photographs, and comprehensive details of your travel insurance policy (which must include high-altitude trekking, mountaineering above 6,000 meters, and emergency helicopter evacuation coverage). Your international flight details are also required. The remaining balance of the expedition cost can be settled upon your arrival in Kathmandu in cash (USD, EUR, or GBP) or via bank transfer, Wise, or credit card (a processing fee may apply for credit card payments). A detailed payment guide will be provided after your initial booking.
(Note: We provide all group technical climbing gear. Please inform us if you need to rent any personal technical gear in Kathmandu.)
Kyajo Ri is a challenging technical climbing peak, requiring significant mountaineering experience, including proficiency in fixed ropes, glacier travel, and rock scrambling. It is suitable for experienced climbers, not beginners.
The ideal seasons for the Kyajo Ri expedition are spring (April to May) and autumn (late September to November) due to more stable weather conditions and clearer skies.
This expedition is typically 22 days, which includes travel to/from Kathmandu, trekking to base camp, multiple acclimatization days, and the climbing period with contingency days.
Climbers should have prior experience with multi-pitch climbing, ice axe and crampon techniques, crevasse rescue, and fixed rope ascending/rappelling. Previous experience on 6,000m peaks is highly recommended.
The summit of Kyajo Ri stands at 6,186 meters (20,295 feet).
Accommodation includes hotels in Kathmandu, teahouses during the trek to base camp, and high-quality mountaineering tents at base camp and high camps.
We provide full board meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) during the trek and climb. This includes varied Nepali and international dishes prepared hygienically, designed to sustain energy levels.
Safety is paramount. Our itinerary includes extensive acclimatization days, and our certified climbing Sherpas are highly experienced in high-altitude emergency management. We carry oxygen for emergencies, satellite phones, and comprehensive first-aid kits.
You will need the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, a TIMS card, and a specific Kyajo Ri Climbing Permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
You will need your own personal climbing gear such as a harness, helmet, ice axe, crampons, ascender (jumar), belay device, and various carabiners/slings. We provide group technical gear, and personal gear can often be rented in Kathmandu.
