The Everest Chola Pass Trek is an exhilarating 17-day adventure that takes you to the iconic Everest Base Camp and crosses the Chola Pass at an altitude of 5,420 meters (17,780 feet).
Chola Pass is one of Nepal’s most famous mountain crossings, connecting Everest to the Gokyo Valley. The trek leads you through two of the country’s most renowned trekking destinations: the picturesque Gokyo Valley and the legendary Everest Base Camp.
This trek adds an extra layer of excitement to the classic Everest Base Camp hike by guiding you across the challenging Chola Pass in the Khumbu region. Perfect for those seeking a more adventurous experience, the trek features a gradual ascent to higher altitudes, offering stunning landscapes as you conquer one of the most demanding passes in the region.
While challenging, the Everest Cho La Pass Trek is highly rewarding. Completing this trek will leave you with a profound sense of achievement. Your journey begins with your arrival in Kathmandu and a scenic flight to Lukla. From there, you’ll pass through Sherpa villages like Phakding, Namche Bazar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gokyo Ri, and Dole.
This trek offers not only adventure but also the chance to immerse yourself in the authentic Himalayan lifestyle. From tasting local dishes to visiting monasteries and interacting with locals, it’s an all-encompassing cultural and physical journey.
Get ready for the trek of a lifetime, one that will challenge you physically and reward you with a sense of accomplishment. Don’t wait—book your Himalayan adventure now.
The best times to trek Chola Pass are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In spring, the weather is pleasant, with clear skies and great visibility, making it perfect for mountain views. However, it is a popular season, so you may encounter crowds on the trails and at teahouses.
Daytime temperatures range from 10-15°C (50-59°F), while it gets colder at higher altitudes. Nighttime temperatures at lower elevations range from 0°C to -5°C (32°F to 23°F), with colder conditions higher up. Autumn, on the other hand, offers steady weather with clear skies and moderate temperatures, making the trek comfortable.
The skies are often clear, providing stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, and although there are fewer trekkers compared to spring, it still remains a favorite time to go. Daytime temperatures are similar to spring, ranging from 10-15°C (50-59°F) at lower altitudes, and nighttime temperatures drop to 0°C to -5°C (32°F to 23°F) with colder temperatures at higher elevations.

Accommodation along the Chola Pass Trek is generally provided in teahouses or lodges. These teahouses offer simple but comfortable accommodations, with varying levels of amenities depending on the altitude. In lower villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, teahouses are more luxurious, offering private or shared rooms, hot showers (usually at an extra charge), and communal dining spaces.
As trekkers ascend higher, accommodations become more basic, especially in villages like Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, where twin rooms or dormitories are common, and heating and hot showers may not be available. In the most isolated areas, like Gorak Shep and Dzongla, the rooms are simple, and there may be no heating or showers at all due to the harsh conditions at higher altitudes.
During the trek, food options are generally satisfactory, with teahouses offering a mix of local and simple Western dishes. Common meals include dal bhat, momos, pasta, and pizza. Breakfast typically includes options like pancakes, cornflakes, chapatti, eggs, toast, and porridge.
For lunch and dinner, the menus often mirror the breakfast options, along with soups such as tomato soup, mushroom soup, garlic soup, vegetable soup, and chicken soup. A variety of teas, including black tea, milk tea, lemon tea, ginger tea, and mint tea, are available, along with coffee options such as milk coffee or black coffee.
The Gokyo Chola Pass Trek via Everest Base Camp is a challenging and demanding journey. The rugged terrain, with ascents and descents over glacial moraines and high ridges, can quickly exhaust trekkers. The trek also presents challenges due to the high altitude, where trekkers may experience altitude sickness, which affects oxygen levels and can lead to breathing difficulties and sleep disturbances.
Extreme weather conditions, with harsh temperatures and low humidity, add to the difficulty, and trekkers are at risk of frostbite, especially when crossing the Cho La Pass. To safely complete the trek, trekkers need to prepare adequately with proper acclimatization, gear, and awareness of the environmental challenges.
The best time to do the Gokyo Chola Pass Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is generally clear, and the trails are at their most stable.
The Chola Pass Trek is considered to be of moderate to strenuous difficulty due to its high altitude, challenging terrain, and long daily distances. Adequate physical fitness and acclimatization are essential for a successful trek.
Accommodation along the trip primarily consists of teahouses or lodges, offering basic amenities such as beds, blankets, and meals. Trekkers should be prepared for simple and rustic accommodations, especially at higher altitudes.
Essential items to pack for the trek include appropriate clothing layers, sturdy hiking boots, a sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures, personal medications, trekking poles, and a backpack. A comprehensive packing list can help ensure you have all the necessary gear for the journey.
Altitude sickness is a common concern on the Chola Pass Trekking journey due to the high elevations reached during the journey. Trekkers should acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness. It’s essential to act responsibly and seek medical help if needed.
Some of the highlights of the Everest Chola Pass Trek include the stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Other highlights include the pristine Gokyo Lakes, the challenging ascent to Chola Pass, the vibrant Sherpa culture in the villages along the route, and the opportunity to visit Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
